I like the first example. But how does it attack? Do you run one attack with the '+14' to hit? This would basically remove all their damage. Doest every model in the horde get an attack? That would be realy strong with a +14. Or only those in the front line? At that point it may be just as easy to just run them seperate.

Idea, legendary resistance with the description, but when its used a layer action activates being detrimental to the boss, like maybe the magical portals to his minions close, or something like that, so that legendary resistance becomes almost like a hitpoint bar for the outside effects

I would also include special actions, like a horde of orcs can: 1- Swarm and sorround (dex check), if fail then pc cant move until saves or reduces the horde to half hp (bloodied) 2- overpower and drop prone (str check). 3- multi attack (divide horde number by half and thats how many attacks you get). I would roll all attacks at once, if many pcs in range then distribute equally so not to kill instantly (or maybe not hehe) and for each succesfull atack just use avg damage, not rolled. Makes em more interesting, challenging, and i think faster to run. Maybe the two first skills u can only one per turn

I saw someone do this in a really clever way within the DnD rules. They made a single stat block of a bunch of orcs and modelled it after swarms, like of rats. It's just a Swarm of Orcs.

So with the combined mob with the higher hit points how do you handle spells like thunder wave that hits every creature within 15 ft? Do you multiply the damage by the supposed number of creatures? How do you handle constitution saves for that?

My issue with minions is that a wizard can fireball a bunch at once, but a melee character might only be able to kill one or two, despite doing a lot of damage. The horde idea is great.

Wasn't there something about a kobolt cult deep into the caves underneath the aisle? Or I am I making that up? They worshop a different drangon and not Behomot. In between major levels i was going to have them do fetch quest or something like encounter the owlbear while exploring to gather some herbs or one of the kabolt children goes missing so they have to attack a rogue bandit kobolt group.

How do you get a party thats on track enough to get through all that in less than 10 sessions?

This one has been brutal for my 3 players (druid, sorcerer, and wizard all level 2). They have about 5hp and 2 spell slots between the 3 of them and they haven't even broken the crystal yet 😬

I only have 2 players, so here I am not nerfing anybody and telling them "your objective is to not die"😅. It takes only two not-so-big battles to fully wear them down, but overall, if I use monsters 1 or 2 cr levels liwer than them, it's fine.
